The second EEBIOMASS Summer School took place from 21–25 October 2024 at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena. We received a total of 102 applications (33% female, 28% from German institutions), representing a 50% increase compared to the first EEBIOMASS Summer School in 2022.
A total of 43 applicants were invited to attend the summer school in person in Jena. Eight participants declined the invitation for various reasons. In the end, 35 participants attended the summer school in Jena (17 women, 18 participants from German institutions, 21 nationalities).
The summer school focused on the different aspects of the ESA Earth Explorer mission BIOMASS, introducing participants to the mission objectives, technical background (including SAR, tomography, interferometry, and polarimetry), and related research topics (such as above-ground biomass and the carbon cycle).
We were pleased to welcome two external speakers: Björn Rommen from the European Space Agency presented the BIOMASS mission, and Anja Rammig from the Technical University of Munich shared her research on forest dynamics in the Amazon region. In addition to lectures and hands-on exercises, participants had the opportunity to present their own research through talks or poster sessions and discuss their work with experts on site.
📌 Teaching materials, including lecture slides, Jupyter notebooks, and exercise guidelines, were made available to participants online.
